Stucky, 8.

8. things you said when you were crying

I should anticipate it at this point, really.

Every night, you wake up screaming, crying, or both. I wake up, but you’re too panicked to notice. I try comforting you, but you just move away from me, sobbing and rocking yourself until you calm down or fall back asleep.

I really should anticipate it, but in the back of my mind I always wish that you’ll sleep soundly. But that’s not how it works. It’s a vicious, horrible routine.

all Bucky wanted to do was get some more tea and now this. Thanks a lot, Sam. You had to fuckin’ tell him, you ass.

Aggressively Progressive Steve Rogers is so what I’m  here for.

STeve would unleash and be all “DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WHOOPING COUGH SUCKS?! DO YOU?! DO YOU REALLY?! ARE YOU FUCKIN’ STUPID?! BUCKY, TELL THEM HOW I BROKE TWO RIBS! TELL THEM!”

Omg, new headcanon, Beleaguered Bucky Barnes being grabbed by the shoulders and practically lifted into camera view by Steve shouting about how Bucky needs to confirm some terrible illness because no one else is alive form that time to corroborate any of Steve’s claims.  Bucky shyly telling the reporters that yes, Steve did indeed have that thing adn yeah it is dangerous and Steve jumping back into frame like “I told you!  I TOLD YOU IT SUCKED SHUT UP JENNY MCCARTHY!”

“AND YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE?! POLIO!”

“Steve you never had fucking polio-”

“YEA BUT IT STILL SUCKED! KNOW WHAT STOPPED IT?! VACCINES!”

“Oh my God, Steve.”

“I DIDN’T EVNENKNOW WHAT THAT SHOT WOULD DO TO ME BUT I TOOK IT!”

“Steve, that’s… That’s not really a good argument.”

“I DON’T CARE FOX NEWS NEEDS TO STOP USING MY IMAGE!”

“Steve, doll, calm down.”

“I VOTED FOR OBAMA!”

I love everything about this post

image

And all the while Sam is just laughing his fucking ass off and Bucky is wondering if he could just go take another nap for a few years.

Okay but imagine the savvy pediatrician who shyly sends Steve a message at Avengers Tower. She loves his message. Loves it. Wants to know if she can give her vaccinated kids a sticker of the shield because she wants other parents to subtly get the message, and of course what kid doesn’t love Cap? She’s no graphic artist, but she got a picture of the shield off the Internet …

… two weeks later, a box arrives at her office. It’s an order of shield stickers, very clearly actually produced by a graphic artist. Some of them sparkle, some are metallic, and some of them say “Protecting my friends by protecting me!” for the older kids who can appreciate the idiocy of the anti-vax movement.

There’s also a hand-written note with Pepper’s personal address at Avengers Tower listed on it: Contact us when you need more. No charge. Keep fighting the good fight.

They end up going on sale after the pediatrician’s colleagues see them and want to pass them out. Steve insists that any profit they might make should go to the March of Dimes. Tony and Pepper barely talk about it before they go “do you know how little it costs to produce stickers, Steve?” and decide to donate the entire sales cost. They’re not expensive to sell, either, but it adds up.

Vaccination rate goes up. Being an anti-vaxxer stops being trendy and starts being seen as living in the dark ages.

Steve Rogers, everyone.

It got better.

Much better.

did i just see a gifset that erased all of clint’s family for a dog

yes, this gifset is going around at the moment. and it doesn’t come out of the fandom hating women, and it doesn’t come out of the fandom trying to force a ship into canon either.

clint’s family literally comes out of the blue. there is nothing in earlier movies that even alludes to their presence. ever. if natasha knew about the laura and the kids when they first got marries (likely) then why wasn’t it used when clint was brainwashed by loki? it would have been rather cliched, but don’t you think it would have been one of the ways nat tried to break the hold loki had on clint before resorting to violence? a what about laura? or you going to leave your kids like that? would have been so easy to throw in, and yet nothing

clint’s family, and therefore laura, were used as a cheap character development ploy. give a guy a family and suddenly ‘wow character depth look at him such a family guy’. these characters - characters with potential could have been introduced in a different way, could have been given something more than a handful of scenes with very little development. they were there to build clint’s character, give him something the viewers could relate to, and then allude to clint’s death later in the movie (and then surprise, it never happened, ahah tricked ya!) laura wasn’t treated as a character, she was used as a plot point. and isn’t that against what we’re asking for in female characters? she’s literally being used to develop a male character. the reason she exists in the mcu is to add character development to clint. there is literally no other reason for her to be there. and the fact that this gifset exists, and still manages to hit the main points of clint (and the movie) without her proves that. that’s not representation, that’s a pisspoor attempt at it whilst fulfilling a common trope for female characters. and we know marvel can do better than that. (she most fits into the Wet Blanket Wife trope, whose function is: to slow the pace of the story and provide emotional heft. but that’s just my opinion)

so while i don’t agree with completely removing laura, one of the mcu’s few female characters, from the playing board, i think her reason for being there was, to put it simply, a stupid decision. or, at the least, poorly executed. had more been done to show her and the kids off, more been done to treat her like an actual character, then this wouldn’t be a problem. joss said it himself, he gave clint that life because of how he - joss - grew up, not because of any willingness to add female characters, or develop a character properly.

and then we look at clint. while the mcu is markedly different to the comics, to any iteration of the comics, you’d think the fact that clint, in almost every iteration, is hopeless. outside of being an avenger, he’s a mess, his relationships fall to pieces, the only thing somewhat steady in his life was lucky, because not even clint could fuck that one up (apart from that time he did but lets not go there).

my point is, people aren’t hating on the women, people aren’t hating on clint’s family. people are looking at the information we were presented and thinking this doesn’t make sense. people are looking at clint’s family and thinking, this isn’t right.

please dont’ think i’m hating on laura here, that is absolutely not my intention. do i want to see more of her? yeah. do i want her to actually have development, and become a character rather than a puppet? hell yeah. but if you look at the earlier movies, if you look at clint, you can see that she was simply an afterthought.

one thing that i’ve noticed with tumblr, particularly with the marvel fandom, is how everyone screams for more representation, whether it’s for female representation, poc representation, queer representation, disabled representation, so on and so forth, but when we actually get it, one of the first things the fandom does is demonize that person.

look at bobbi morse on agents of SHIELD. she’s a character who’s bringing female rep. she’s smart, she’s competent, she holds her own in fights at least as well as her fellow male agents do, and she also has a softer romantic side. look at jemma simmons. she might not be able to snap someone’s neck with her thighs, but she’s probably the smartest person on agents of SHIELD. she has the answers, and everyone looks to her to explain the things that they don’t understand because if anyone can do it, it’s her.

but what does the fandom do? the fandom demonizes both of them. bobbi’s a bitch for keeping secrets from poor sweet lance hunter who only wants to be with her (despite the fact that he says horrible things about her and to her when she’s not being lovey-dovey to him). jemma’s a bitch because she feels betrayed by fitz, the person who’s been her best friend and #1 person for years, the person whom she’s trusted more than anyone else, lying to her.

furthermore, look at mack. a poc on the show who’s refusing to keep quiet about his opinions, opinions that actually come from a valid place, even if they’re also shitty (opinions can be valid and shitty at the same time). he’s smart, and he gave fitz a chance when a lot of the members of the show, particularly in the beginning of season 2, were treating him differently and unsure of how to act around him. the only person who didn’t was mack. and what does the fandom do? beat the shit out of him for being vocal about the long term good of the team.

if coulson, hunter, or fitz did anything bobbi, mack, and jemma are doing, the fandom wouldn’t think twice, and this is becoming a huge problem. every time we get diversity, the fandom shits on those diverse characters. thankfully, everyone seemed to all agree that tripp was an angel who shouldn’t have been fucked with whatsoever, but that’s just one character that we’ve had so far. i sincerely do not believe that bobbi, mack, and jemma would be getting this kind of fandom backlash the way they have been if coulson, hunter, or fitz were making the same choice that they are.

and i’m not even saying that jemma, bobbi, and mack are right, and their counterparts are wrong. i’m not saying that just because they’re diverse representation, everyone needs to agree with everything they do because that’s just not realistic, and it’s a stupid reason for sharing someone’s opinion. what i’m saying is that attacking them so severely for coming from arguably valid positions is what’s fucked up, especially when i would legitimately bet $10 that if any of our white man friends made the same decision, they wouldn’t be as largely demonized.

we can’t yell for representation and then the second we get it, reduce these characters down to their stereotypes. bobbi and jemma are bitches because they’re keeping things from the men in their lives/unhappy with the decisions the men in their lives have made. mack is an angry black man for daring to be vocal about the fact that he disagrees with some of the choices that have the potential to benefit the team in the long term.  calling for more representation and then attacking the characters giving it isn’t progress, and it’s telling marvel that we don’t actually want it. and this isn’t even me getting started on how people talked shit about sousa in agent carter  but we do want it. we want representation, so that means we’ve got to stop shitting on the characters who give it whenever we get it.
